Light Trapped in Ice

Iskanin is a light object currently in the concept phase, carrying a breath of cold Nordic nature. Its name, hidden in a Nordic language, contains a subtle code—referencing both the icy character of the material and the abstract silhouette of a small organic creature. This prototype was created as a laboratory to explore how light behaves inside a solid, seemingly impermeable mass.

The body of the object is cast from transparent resin, into which flexible PMMA optical fibers are fixed. The heart of Iskanin is a base equipped with an intelligent RGB LED matrix. Thanks to this, the light seamlessly pulses and changes colors through the fibers and the resin mass itself. Once illuminated, the object evokes the illusion of organic synapses glowing inside a block of ice.

The Aesthetics of an Exposed Process

A key characteristic of Iskanin is its raw surface. The object was cast into a special 3D-printed mold, whose layered structure and subtle imprints were intentionally left on the final body. This technological texture gives the object a unique ruggedness and a matte, frosted character. Far from a defect, this is a deliberate diffusion element—the lines of the mold perfectly refract and scatter the light from the internal source in unexpected directions, creating a unique interplay of shadows and reflections.

A Living Concept in an Open Laboratory

Iskanin represents a project in the process of birth. It demonstrates the journey from digital design and the print mold to manual casting. The combination of an addressable LED matrix at the base and optical fibers embedded in the polymer opens up new possibilities for programming interactive lighting effects. It is a perfect example of a concept that is still being refined and is seeking its final, definitive form for a specific space.
