A Living House on a Tabletop Scale
KODU is an original interior light fixture whose sharp Nordic name hides a clue to the entire concept—you just have to search a little. The object transforms a modern light sculpture into a pulsating, minimalist apartment building. The individual protruding geometric boxes represent separate "apartments" where a fictional life unfolds—lights randomly turn on, change colors, and turn off, as if the residents were just leaving or going to bed.
This playful architectural concept comes to life thanks to a unique "elevator" effect. A vertical column of LEDs simulates the movement of a cabin traveling up through the floors. As soon as the elevator reaches the chosen floor, the light in the corresponding apartment immediately illuminates. KODU is thus not just a passive source of lighting, but a pulsating microworld that brings dynamics and a fascinating atmosphere to your desk or dresser.
Architectural 3D Printing and Physics-Based Light Direction
The foundation of the KODU structure is 3D printing from PLA filament. Fully matching modern standards, the fixture is powered via a universal USB-C connector. The entire object can be easily controlled through an intuitive web interface where you can adjust overall brightness and color saturation. However, the highlight is the software playfulness of the individual modes:
House: The default mode simulating the organic and irregular life within a building.
Layers & Rainbow: Controlled layering of colors by floors or a smooth rainbow wave.
Ring: A unique animation where a light ring falls down the building under the influence of virtual gravity and, upon hitting the bottom, elastically "bounces" like a mechanical spring.
Cells: A mode that simulates the organic life of cells traveling up and down the light cylinder—essentially the entire structure of our house.
Strobe: A dynamic flash mode for more daring lighting scenes.
Two Design Variants of Light Emission
To ensure the object fits perfectly into your interior and meets your aesthetic standards, KODU is available in two material versions:
All-white variant: Provides soft, diffuse light that gently glows through the entire body of the object, creating an ethereal lighting aura in the space.
Grey-and-white variant: A version for lovers of contrast and realism. The grey walls of the boxes effectively mask side emission, while the pure white "windows" of the apartments let maximum light pass forward. This sophisticated detail highlights sharp architectural contours and more faithfully simulates the view of an illuminated night city.
