Caleidron: A Dreamlike Laboratory of Light and Optical Illusions

Caleidron is an experimental interactive light and projector in one, blurring the lines between digital programming and pure physical optics. This project was born as a playful attempt to tame the light beam and transform it into fluid, organic patterns. The result is a captivating light show projected onto the ceiling or walls, evoking the hypnotic and seamless dynamics of looking into a futuristic kaleidoscope.

Thanks to its playful nature and ability to generate an infinite array of color combinations and dreamlike trails, Caleidron is perfectly suited as ambient lighting or as a mesmerizing nightlight for a child's bedroom. It can instantly transform an ordinary room into a magical space full of imagination, where light literally tells stories.

Optical System and Digital Brain

Beneath the minimalist 3D-printed chassis lies a sophisticated optical chain that refracts and bends light into unexpected angles.

  • Complex Optical System: The core of the visual magic is a combination of a triangular glass prism, precise Fresnel lenses, and a final glass lens at the top of the fixture. This mechanical system captures light from below, refracts it, and projects it into the space as sharp, yet smoothly bleeding psychedelic trails.

  • Intelligent LED Matrix & ESP32: The light source consists of a matrix of addressable smart LEDs. These are driven by an ESP32 microcontroller, which calculates mathematical algorithms in real time to control color shifts, fading, and the motion of light points.

  • Connectivity & Modern Power: Caleidron allows control over all light effects, animation speeds, or color palettes via an intuitive web application. Power is delivered through a universal USB-C connector.

  • Construction: The entire base and internal chassis are 3D-printed from sturdy PLA filament.
